Meet the Ayatollahs

August 6th, 2009

Exellent article on the New Statesman website about the various ayatollahs in Iran.

As Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is sworn in again as president amid further protests, Juan Cole, one of the world’s leading experts on Shia Islam, introduces the senior clerics whose conflicting views are influencing events in Iran.

Outing Iran

June 29th, 2009

From Andrew Sullivan‘s the Daily Dish:

Even as the flow of footage, tweets, and reporting from Iran has started to ebb, the Dish wants to keep the spotlight on the Iranian people as much as possible in the coming weeks. So while continuing to post fresh political content, we want to start featuring as much cultural content as we can find – particularly as seen through the eyes of young Iranian bloggers. The more Americans get to know Iran’s rapidly-ascending millennials, the greater chance there is for melting stereotypes and finding commonalities, however incremental.

The Situation in Iran

June 17th, 2009

Before turning to a brief analysis of some possible scenarios in Iran going forward, let us begin by acknowledging none of us (really, it is true!) can genuinely know what exactly is happening in Iran now several days into this remarkable crisis.

An in-depth analysis of what is going on in Iran by Gregory Djerejian. I found this via Andrew Sullivan’s blog post.

According to Wikipedia: Gergory Djerrejian is an Armenian-American, attorney, hedge fund manager, and blogger/creator of the weblog,

Earlier tonight I watched a documentary by Alex Jones, the American film maker/talk show host. The film is called The Obama Deception and explains that the new president is pretty much a puppet taking orders from Wall Street (the banks).

Lots of people would dismiss Alex Jones and other info warriors and label them conspiracy theory nut-heads but I more or less agree with the facts presented in this movie although some of it is very hard to swallow. Also, seeing Mr Jones raving on for parts of the movie is a little off-putting – I’m not being disrespectful but it’s a just too much hearing him shout at the Bilderberg members through a megaphone for 5 minutes.

After watching the movie, I decided to make a mp3 mix while I was a little inspired by the whole Obama thing. I started with a beautiful track by Nina Simone followed by some Dub, D&B and rock tracks. The music then moves on to some funky techno.

The beat matching of the dance tracks is not great (I haven’t played for almost 3 months – even then I wasn’t that good!) but I do like most of music.

If anyone is interested, I can get a track listing sorted. Hope you enjoy it (click the play button below).

Is this fake or set-up by the CIA? Or does this man really think he’s telling the truth? He seems pretty convinced and backs up his arguments pretty well. I think what he’s saying doesn’t solely apply to the old USSR – it can clearly be said about the actions of the current regime in the USA. Judge for yourselves.
